Mette Winckelmann has degrees from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (2003), Academy of Art and Design, Bratislava, Slovakia (1997) and Kolding Design School (1996).
She works with both formal and abstract forms but often with a implicit strong conceptual content aiming to uncover political aspects. In media such as painting, textiles, collages and installations, her starting-points are communities, identity, gender and freedom and the relationship between the physical motion of the body in contrast to the mental and spiritual aspects and perceptions of space. Mette Winckelmann often uses elements of artisanship and/or crafts in her artworks, combining and exploring in which different materials. For example, classical patchwork, with its geometrical forms, its universal language and secondary art history, is often is the role model to develop the structure of individual works.
