Gillion Grantsaan b. 1968 Paramaribo, Suriname, South America, graduated from the Rietveld art academy of Amsterdam) likes to portray himself as an conceptual artist reflecting on the fragmented relationship between language (visual/musically/written) and the self. For this purpose he has developed a fragmented art practice. A practice that floats on the invented idea Blaka. Blakart a.k.a. Ogri art. The written part of Blaka is a philosophical, literary and poetical investigation into what art is, could be and why. The visual works of blaka try a much as possible to incorporate the written idea’s but they do have their own development and trajectory independent of the written works. The visual works have developed from drawings and room filling installations into an extended research in the digital possibilities of our age as well as short performances that focus on the spoken and unspoken, of understanding and misunderstanding.
Gillion Grantsaan has had group and solo exhibitions in the Netherlands, Suriname, Germany, England, Spain, Denmark, Keny and Ghana.
